A Diabetic Assessment is for patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.
In this Appointment:
- Vascular Assessment: your podiatrist will perform a vascular assessment using a doppler (listening to the pluses in your blood vessels) to assess the health of your peripheral blood vessels.
- Neurological: your podiatrist will perform a series of small sensations tests to determine if you have a loss of protective sensation in your feet.
- Dermatological: together with the vascular and neurological assessment, the skins colour, temperature, texture and hair growth demonstrate on the surface the health of your peripheral blood and nerve supply.
This assessment is performed annually in patients with minimal neurovascular damage and more frequently in those with severe diabetic changes.
A neurological assessment for sensation can also be performed on those who have idiopathic (unknown cause) or non-diabetic peripheral neuropathy to assess and monitor the change in your peripheral nerve health.
